What causes infertility
What Causes Infertility?

Infertility is defined as the inability to conceive after at least one year of unprotected sexual intercourse. According to World Health Organization (WHO) estimates, approximately 8-10% of couples experience some form of infertility during their lifetime. While infertility is often attributed to women, male infertility is responsible for nearly half of all infertility cases.

A number of biological, medical, and environmental factors can cause infertility in both men and women.

Causes of Male Infertility

Male infertility can arise from issues with sperm production, sperm quality, or sperm transport through the male reproductive system. These issues may be caused by:

  • Advancing Age: Aging can impact sperm production and quality.
  • Hormonal Imbalance: Disruptions in hormone levels can affect fertility.
  • Erectile Dysfunction: Difficulty maintaining an erection can prevent conception.
  • Premature Ejaculation: Early ejaculation can hinder the sperm from reaching the egg.
  • Retrograde Ejaculation: Sperm enters the bladder instead of exiting through the penis.
  • Testicular Trauma: Injury to the testicles can impair sperm production.
  • Infection: Infections can damage sperm or reproductive organs.
  • Anti-Sperm Antibodies: The immune system mistakenly targets sperm.
  • Varicoceles: Swollen veins in the testicle or scrotum can affect sperm production.
  • Obstruction in the Reproductive Tract: Blockages can prevent the transport of sperm.
  • Congenital Defects: Birth defects can impact reproductive health.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, drug abuse, excessive alcohol intake, and exposure to radiation or toxins can affect fertility.
  • Working Trends and Environment: Occupational hazards can impact reproductive health.
Causes of Female Infertility

If a couple is unsuccessful in conceiving after about a year of trying, it is recommended to consult a doctor or gynecologist for a referral to a fertility specialist. Both partners will undergo a series of tests to diagnose the type of infertility and develop a treatment plan.

  • Advancing Age: Fertility declines with age, particularly after 35.
  • Thyroid Disorders: Imbalances can affect menstrual cycles and ovulation.
  • Polycystic Ovaries: This condition can disrupt hormone levels and ovulation.
  • Irregular Menstruation: Inconsistent periods can indicate ovulation problems.
  • Ovulatory Disorders: Issues with egg release can prevent conception.
  • Amenorrhea: Absence of periods can signal underlying fertility issues.
  • Damaged or Blocked Fallopian Tubes: Prevents sperm from reaching the egg.
  • Fibroids: Noncancerous growths can interfere with implantation.
  • Endometriosis: Tissue growth outside the uterus can affect fertility.
  • Poor Ovarian Reserve: Reduced egg quantity and quality can hinder conception
  • Premature Ovarian Failure: Early loss of ovarian function impacts fertility.
  • Recurrent Miscarriage: Multiple miscarriages can indicate fertility issues.
  • Infections: Pelvic infections can damage reproductive organs.
  • Premature Menopause: Early onset menopause affects fertility.
  • Pelvic Adhesive Disease: Scar tissue can cause reproductive blockages.
  • Anatomical Defects: Structural issues can impact fertility.
  • Lifestyle Factors: Smoking, drug abuse, excessive alcohol intake, and exposure to radiation or toxins can affect fertility.
  • Working Trends and Environment: Occupational hazards can impact reproductive health.

It was a wonderful experience coming to Gaudium & meeting Dr. Manika khanna & team. It’s been 8 years of marriage & like every couple wants we also wanted to start our family but with unkown reason we went to multiple doctors & had failed IVF cycles. By the grace of God, we came to Gaudium & started IVF treatment from Dr. Manika. Her special care & personalize attention resulted in sucessfull pregnacy of my wife. Now ,she is in her later months & about to deliver.

We had a great experience in Gaudium. all the staff ( nurses, reception & support) are very helpful & friendly. The enjoyment is great. Though my wife has got a high risk pregnancy due to multiple pregnancy but till now Dr. Manika & staff has helped us pave the way & I am sure we will have the sucessfull delivery.

I will again thank from my bottom of my heart to Dr. Manika & team for all the happiness in our life. God bless her & team (sister lily, Ragini, Kavita Mini, jasbeer, Renu & all the support doctors).
