What is ovulation?
Ovulation is the release an egg from ovaries which can be either fertilised by a sperm or be shed during menstruation. You are most fertile on five days prior and till the day of ovulation.
It is not possible to predict the time of ovulation accurately but the following methods can definitely help to have a fair idea and plan for a successful conception.
The Calendar Method
If your periods are regular and you face no irregularities in the number of days each month, then the calendar method could help. Although this method is not very reliable but being the easiest of all, it is the most commonly used method.
To know your fertile window, you simply need know the date of your next expected period and count backwards 17 days from that date. The day of ovulation and the five days before it, is your fertile window period. Let us explain this with the help of an example, considering day 1 as the first day of your cycle and day 28 as the day for your next period, your fertility window between the 11th to the 16th day.
Ovulation predictor kit
The other and a much more reliable method for knowing the ovulation days is the Ovulation Predictor Kit. There are two types of kits available: one is for testing the saliva and the other for testing the urine. In the saliva test, the estrogen levels in the body are checked. A rise in the estrogen level indicates the nearing ovulation days. On the other hand, the urine test checks the Luteinizing Hormone in the body. A rise in the LH indicates that the ovaries are prepared to release the egg.
Vaginal Discharge
The change in consistency of the vaginal discharge known as the cervical mucus also helps in predicting the ovulation days. The thick and sticky discharge becomes clear and slippery indicating that ovulation is about to happen.
