Green tea and Pregnancy- Never go along

Green tea is considered one of the proficient sources to increase cervical mucus because of its lower caffeine content. Also, there is no doubt to the fact that green tea is very effective in solving absorption health issues. However, the best IVF doctors in India suggest that too much amount of green tea should be avoided during the time period of conceiving. Let’s find out the effect green tea makes on the body.

The body’s ability to absorb folic acid is mostly affected by the over-consumption of green tea. Continuous absorption of folic acid is very crucial for

women who are trying to conceive.

Why is folic acid important for women?

  • It helps prevent spina bifida.
  • Helps in the proper development of the neural tube- With the development of the embryo, the neural tube takes the form of the central nervous system.

How Green Tea may affect Folic Acid absorption?

According to the IVF Centre in Delhi, it has been found that green tea contains catechin, which has a higher concentration of ECGC (Epigallocatechin-3-Gallate; antioxidant). In a study, it has been proven that ECGC restrains the enzyme dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR), which helps in the growth of cancer cells. This high amount of ECGC is dangerous for women, trying to conceive and may also increase the risk of having a child with spina bifida, or other neural tube disorders.

Are you getting enough Folic Acid in your diet?

In order to get enough of sufficient folic acid, one must include whole food in their diet.

Below are some of the whole foods rich in folic acid.

  • Tomato
  • Orange
  • Strawberries
  • Fennel
  • Sunflower seeds
  • Papaya
  • Okra
  • Cauliflower

Even a high amount of caffeine consumption for women trying to conceive is dangerous and can put them at the risk of spontaneous abortion. Remember, if you consume regular 1-2 cups of green tea, it is better to cut it down during the period of conceiving.

Some of the IVF Centres in India, recommend avoiding green and black tea while trying to conceive as it can affect folate levels and put you at risk. Both green and black tea can decrease the ability of the body to absorb folic acid. Try to include as much whole food (as mentioned above) as possible in your diet.
