Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI Treatment)

ICSI treatment in delhi

ICSI or Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection is a fertility treatment often combined with IVF (in vitro fertilization). It is one of the most successful treatment options for male-factor infertility and is used in nearly half of all IVF treatments. Fertility specialists at Gaudium IVF & Gynae Solutions Centre have successfully conducted thousands of ICSI treatment cycles for patients seeking the best infertility treatment in India.

While in the past couples with severe male infertility had to rely on donor sperm, ICSI treatment makes it possible to select and use healthy sperm from the male partner even when the sperm count is fairly low. Babies born through ICSI-IVF where the father’s sperm are used are thus genetically linked to both parents as opposed to when donor sperm are used.

To simply further, ICSI is essentially a refined form of IVF. While in a standard IVF procedure, sperm are placed with oocytes (eggs) in a lab dish and fertilization is awaited, ICSI goes a step further where a single healthy sperm is selected and injected directly into a mature oocyte. This is an extremely delicate procedure and must be carried out in a fully equipped laboratory by an experienced and well-trained embryologist.

Once your infertility diagnosis is complete, your doctor may advise ICSI in the following cases:

  • when infertility is caused by sperm related problems — low sperm count, poor quality, poor sperm motility (movement), abnormally shaped sperm, or other problems with sperm availability
  • when sufficient healthy sperm are being produced but ejaculation is affected by obstruction in reproductive organs
  • If the couple is unable to have sexual intercourse for biological or medical reasons
  • For same sex couples or single parents, ICSI treatment with donor sperm may be advised

ICSI Treatment Procedure

The entire ICSI cycle takes between 4 and 6 weeks. Treatment begins with ovulation induction where fertility medication is used to stimulate the ovaries to develop and release several eggs. Once the eggs are mature and ready for retrieval, both partners undergo simultaneous procedures at the clinic.

The male partner provides a fresh semen sample on the day of the procedure. If there are problems with ejaculation, sperm may be collected surgically from a testicle. The embryologist then selects and prepares healthy sperm and injects them into individual eggs retrieved from the ovaries.

The fertilization takes from two to three days. The resulting embryo is placed inside the uterus using a flexible tube called a catheter, three to five days after fertilization. At Gaudium IVF Centre, the entire procedure takes place in a sterile, fully-equipped lab following stringent international protocol.

In most cases your fertility specialist would perform ICSI treatment on multiple eggs in order to obtain more than one healthy embryos. You may opt for embryo freezing to store the surplus good quality embryos for a future pregnancy.

Once embryo transfer is complete, it is time to let nature take its course and wait for signs of pregnancy to show up. Missing the next menstrual cycle is an indication that pregnancy may have been achieved, which is confirmed using a pregnancy test kit.

If you need a second opinion or are considering ICSI treatment from the best IVF centre in India, the fertility specialists at Gaudium IVF will be happy to answer your queries and help you make an informed decision.
